How to play Rummy 500

Draw, meld, discard

Two to four players use 52 cards without jokers. Two players receive thirteen each; three or four receive seven each. Sets contain three or four equal ranks in different suits. Runs contain at least three consecutive cards of one suit. Aces may be low or high, never around the corner: Q-K-A and A-2-3 are legal, K-A-2 is not.

Draw one card from stock, or choose a discard and take it plus every card above it. You must immediately use the chosen discard in a legal new meld or lay it onto a meld already on the table, using your own cards to qualify. Cards above it cannot help qualify that pickup. You may then lay more melds, extend any player’s meld, and discard one card. You may go out by melding your last card without a final discard.

Scoring and the empty stock

Cards you meld or lay off score for you: Aces 15, faces 10, other ranks their number. An Ace placed in an A-low run scores 1. Unmelded Aces still cost 15. At hand end, subtract your remaining hand from your meld points; negative scores are possible. When stock is empty, choose a qualifying pickup or End stock to tally the hand. First to reach 500 at hand end wins, with the highest score deciding and ties shared.

Maribel’s tips

A tempting deep pickup can leave expensive cards in your hand. Check how many cards you will collect, and look for inexpensive layoffs before discarding.
